Historically, it is said that women have been banned from playing Yoruba bata drums known as talking drums. However, the Afro Cuban women from Havana, Cuba have attempted to change that narrative by developing a culture in which women dance and play to the talking drum.

Cuba's female Afro Cuban folkloric group known as Obiní Batá have pride in their love for the beautiful culture peculiar to the Yorubas. They have had the culture passed down to them from generations and the group was founded in 1993.

The bata drum in Cuba originated as an instrument that was used by African slaves. The Obiní Batá proudly break the gender norms and challenge the notions of the role of women in Yoruba in which women are prohibited from playing the bata drums.
