The Project co-host Carrie Bickmore made a surprising on-air confession during Wednesday’s episode, revealing that underneath her dyed-blonde hair she’s “fully grey”.

The revelation came after a news item about a fellow TV host’s hair colour.

Canadian news anchor Lisa LaFlamme was sacked from her on-air position in June, reportedly because her hair had turned grey. Facing a wave of public backlash, her employer denied that the 35-year TV veteran’s grey hair was the reason she’d been replaced with a younger, male colleague.

Even burger chain Wendy’s offered their support, giving the usual red-headed girl in their logo a grey makeover.

“I hope if Wendy’s found grey meat in their burgers, they would be changing that!” Peter Helliar joked after the story had aired.

“Is that what you’ve taken out of this story? You guys don’t have to worry about this, do you?” Bickmore told the all-male panel, pointing out that they’d “all be allowed to keep their jobs” should they ever go grey.

“Is there something you want to tell us, Carrie?” co-host Waleed Aly teased – and Bickmore was more than happy to.

“I’m fully grey under here,” she announced, pointing to her blonde hair.

Aly noted that grey hair seemed to be particularly unusual among the “very blonde” personalities on US and Australian television, but said that in the UK, grey hair is more accepted.

Bickmore, who recently returned from an extended family trip to London, agreed.

“Yes, I did notice that in the UK. I’ll move there and do it!”

Bickmore made headlines back in 2016 when she dyed her usually blonde locks brunette for a hair colour advertising campaign – but the self-effacing star revealed that one of her biggest fans wasn’t so keen on her big makeover.

“Nan doesn’t like my hair,” Bickmore told her co-panellists on The Project at the time.

“That’s fine. She had watched TV for two weeks (after I got it done) and thought I’d gone on holiday and they found a girl with different-coloured hair that sounded like me to fill in for me.”

Elsewhere in last night’s episode of The Project, Bickmore sat down with ex-Silverchair rocker Daniel Johns for a remarkably candid interview, where he opened up about his fractured relationship with his former bandmates, his difficult relationship to music and even the recent car crash that forced him into rehab.
